Australia wasn't always a nation.
Until 1901, Australia was a group of Australian Colonies, all separately owned by the British government. The event of the Australian Colonies becoming one nation called Australia is called Federation.
Federation: Multiple colonies or countries coming together to form one big country with a central government.
For Australia, Federation means that Australia's six colonies were joined together in one 'indissoluble federal Commonwealth'
This did not happen overnight, and in fact took many years to organise and carry out. Once groups started organising the Federation plan it still took a long time - more than ten years passed between the first draft of the Constitution and it's official confirmation!
